Industrial Waste Data Inventory project: Academic, Student, Industry collaborations

Sohar University completed a consultancy project with Oman Environmental Services Holding Co. SAOC “be’ah” as a part of its Academia Industry collaboration to find solutions for environmental issues in the Sultanate. Entitled “Industrial Waste Data Inventory Project,” this initiative was the result of a competitive bidding process realized through the Ejaad platform.

Led by Professor Rakesh Belwal from the Faculty of Business, the project targeted developing a database of industrial waste generated in the Sultanate. The project team comprised three students – Ali Al Jabri, Fatma Al Badi, and Mohammed Al Rushdi from the Faculty of Engineering and two other investigators – Dr. Shweta Belwal, Dr. Manisha Rajhansh Sinha from Sohar University. The project not only achieved its goals but also trained the graduates in conducting surveys, securing responses through apps, and carrying out daily survey work, follow-ups, field visits, validation, classification, and processing of data to establish a reliable database of the industrial waste.

The project covered seven industrial estates – Rusayl, Salalah, Sohar, Sur, Nizwa, Buraimi, and Samail located in key locations in Oman; three Economic Zones – Al Mazyunah Free Zone, Knowledge Oasis Muscat, Salalah Free Zone, and two Special Economic Zones – Port of Sohar and Duqm. After successful completion, the team was felicitated with certificates and words of appreciation by Eng. Abdul Kareem Qasim Al Balushi, Sector Head, Industrial Waste, and Dr. Mohab Ali Al Hinai, Head of the Environmental Center of Excellence (ECE) at be’ah Headquarter in Muscat. Eng. Abdul Kareem appreciated the work carried out by the Sohar University team and lauded the efforts of graduate students.
